Looking for information about being Catholic? Is there someone you know who may be interested in learning about the process for becoming a Catholic or would like to be confirmed? The team working with the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) invites anyone interested to take the first step by calling the rectory at 323-2916. We will help you answer God's call!! Children's Liturgy of the WordWhat Is Children's Liturgy of the Word? The Liturgy of the Word for Children is an approved form of the weekly Mass readings from the Old Testament, Psalms, Epistles and Gospels, with language designed to be more understandable for children. The readings are not simple paraphrases, but are adapted from the texts of the official lectionary, in compliance with The Directory for Masses with Children issued by the Vatican. If you have ever attended the 11:00 Sunday mass in our parish, you have probably seen it in action. Each Sunday at the 11:00 Mass, Father invites all the children present from kindergarten through 6th grade to the front of the church, where he says a few words to them about the readings for that day, blesses them, and dismisses them to the Social Hall with their teachers. There they will hear the readings in a format designed for children to understand, and to be taught a little about what those readings mean for them. They might have some discussion, or be given a worksheet about those readings. They then return to join their families for the remainder of the Mass. We do not have Children's Liturgy of the Word on the fifth Sunday of the month, during the summer months, or on certain busy Sundays such as Easter or First Eucharist weekend. How Can I Help? We need more teachers! Right now, we have two teams of two and one single teacher, who lead anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five children in understanding the readings each Sunday. Although the program is geared toward schoolchildren, sometimes they have toddlers or an extra large number of children to deal with. The teachers we have now could use some extra help in keeping the kids focused, and as new teacher helpers become more experienced, it would be ideal to add another team to the rotation, so that each team would have just a once-a-month commitment. If you are interested in becoming an assistant or eventually a teacher or team-teacher, please call Cathy Jayjack at the Education Office at 323-1163. This is an ideal service opportunity for teens who like to work with children, but any adult who would like to help out in this ministry would also be more than welcome! © Copyright 2010 Queen of Apostles, All rights reserved.
